Wandering albatross chick, South Georgia

Antarctica & Southern Ocean

I first went south in 1975 when appointed as a field assistant by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) to work on a seabird research programme.  Three of us lived for a summer season (November - March) on Bird Island off the NW end of South Georgia.

Fortunately, I was able to return to the island for the next two summer seasons - again as a field assistant.  But for those summers with permission from BAS I was able to work on more personal projects - my artwork, and wildlife film-making.

Then, after a break of over 30 years I was extremely fortunate in being able to return south.  One of the early return trips was on Pelagic Australis in 2009.  Then in subsequent years I was resident artist and naturalist on many trips south to the Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctic Peninsula with One Ocean Expeditions (until they collapsed and folded in 2019).
